All golfers have heard the expression “keep your eye on the ball”. Boy, how many times have you heard that. Now this is right and this is wrong. You want to keep your head down when you hit the golf ball, but you don’t necessarily always want to aim or be lined up with the ball. What exactly do I mean by this. It really depends on the club that you are using. Golfers have to be able to visualize a spot just behind the ball, or maybe just in front of the ball, in order to hit the correct shot. This is going to be the aim point in the golf swing.

The PGA pro’s know how to do this extremely well. So let me give you an example and this will help you to improve and increase your chances of success.

First things first. Just about all golfers know there is lot more to hitting a good shot other than having an aim point. Aligning the body for a golf swing probably, having the correct golf swing grip pressures is also important, plus much more. These are discussed in other articles. So lets just work on the aim point.

Let’s say for a minute your golf ball ended up in the sand. If you watch a PGA pro hit this shot, they never allow the club head to hit the ball. They have their aim point in the golf swing anywhere from 1/4 inch to 1 inch behind the ball. This allows the sand to carry the ball out of the sand trap and controls the golf balls distance. If a golfer were to hit down on the ball in the sand, the golf ball would fly out like a rocket and go right over the green. So, the golfers aiming point is this 1/4 to 1 inch behind the ball when in the sand. With proper training and practice, you will start trusting your golf swing and you can start to hit shots like the pro’s do from the sand traps.

Where To Aim With Different Golf Clubs

There are a few general thoughts and aiming points for the different clubs, plus you want your hands ahead to start the golf swing. Here are the clubs and aim points:

  • Wedge down to 8 iron, you are going to want the aim point to be in front of the ball so you will take the divot in front of the ball. This is caused when you hit down on the golfball, which is going to increase your distance control
  • Long irons to mid irons you are going to have the aim point right under the ball. You are not going to take a big a divot with these clubs.
  • Woods, you want to aim right on the back of the ball and sweep the ball off the tee or ground to get the maximum distance.Finding, visualizing and contacting the ball correctly is just another nuance of the golf swing. At first it is hard to do, just like everything. Through practice and training your golf swing, you are going to start to hit the clubs better and hit the ball farther than you did before. The game will be a lot more fun and enjoyable when you start to beat the pants off your playing partners.

So practice finding the aim point in the golf swing and watch your game improve. These are just some tips that will aid in you hitting your best shots.
