A Winning Strategy To Better Putting
Tuesday, February 26th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedThe way to have success on the putting greens is to remember to keep your system and routine as simple as possible. putting is an entirely personal thing and I think that is the way that it should be. It should be your own style.
One thing that you have to understand, is that there is really not a right or wrong way for you to have to setup or stand over the ball. For example, just look at how Sam Snead used to putt, so you can see what I mean. Try and not have any mechanical thought running through your head when you are about to putt. Your only concern should be the pace that you want the ball to roll at and how far to the left or to the right of the hole you want the ball to start at.
You have to start to think of your putting in this light. Your object when you are putting is to see how close you can get the ball to the hole. There is a good part about this method, if the ball goes in the hole, it is a bonus. Watching golf evolve over the years, there have been some very successful putters, that have had some very different styles.
That tells you that you can do whatever is comfortable for you.
Want to be a better putter? These putting tips will help you do that.
1.) You need to be relaxed and comfortable before you putt. If your body is tense and your arms are as stiff as boards and don’t forget all the other tensing up things that are done prior to hitting the ball, your success rate is not going to be very good. Stay relaxed
2.) Your number one goal on any putt you hit is to hit the ball in the middle of the putter face. You know when you do this. You can hear and feel when it happen. So, making more putts is as simple as striking the ball in the middle of the putter face.
You have to understand this. Most putts are missed, not because you picked the wrong line or the wrong speed. It is because you did not strike the ball in the middle of the putter face. Thus not getting the ball at the right speed or line.
3.) One thing that I see people doing all the time is changing there putting style. Don’t do this. Just try and hit the ball solid on every attempt. Hitting the ball solid will keep the ball on the intended line longer and this will give you a better chance of making more putts.
4.) One of the main keys is your tempo - back and through. It doesn’t matter if your tempo is fast, slow or in between, just be consistent with it back and then through.
5.) You must stay down and thru the putt. Don’t get anxious and want to see what the ball is doing. You don’t need to. You must not PEEK. Have you ever noticed that when you look up too early, you usually watch the ball miss the hole. I know that is what happens when I look up or peek. Another reason that a lot of putts miss the cups is because you got anxious and you were quick at picking your head up.
What happens when you look up to soon is that you are not going to hit the ball where you want to in relation to the putter face. As mentioned earlier, you must hit the ball in the middle of the putter face. It is very natural for you to want to see where the ball is going. It is very common and even in the pro’s. They just do it less than we do. Try this to help you to keep your head down longer. After you hit the ball, count to one. This will ensure that your head does not come up early.
Try watching Anika and Tiger. They are good examples of great putting and keeping your head down. They can have a 10ft. putt and they will barely see the ball going in the hole. This is really your clue to what you need to be doing, which is keeping your head down. When you start to keep your head down longer your other body parts are going to do the same thing and stay down and through the putt longer. You will start to make more putts for sure.
Follow the steps above and your putting is going to improve. It worked for me and others. Remember the most important step is that all you are trying to do is to see how close you can get the ball to the hole.I have developed a putting system that will reduce 5-10 shots the next time you play, visit the site now to learn some putting tips and get a free copy of Sam Snead “Golf My Way” by clicking Golf putting tips
