Of the millions of people who have played the game, a staggeringly small number could wilfully hit the ball where they aimed.By all accounts, the number is two. Who were they?
Most hard core golfers would quickly identify Ben Hogan. The other is Moe Norman. Moe is a legend among three generations of tour players. He was a Canadian pro who rarely left his home country but was well known to all the top touring pros from Lee Trevino and Nick Price all the way to present day superstar, Tiger Woods.
Like many of you, I have only seen Ben Hogan on video and in the slo-mo footage I have acquired over the years. Moe, on the other hand, I saw in person several times both during tournament play and at clinics he gave later in his career.
Because I caddied from time to time on what is now the Canadian Tour (The Peter Jackson Tour in those days)I actually spent two days in Moe’s group during one particular tournament.
What set these two apart from virtually all their peers? What set them apart?
But just think of how rare this skill is. Countless men and women have toiled at this game, but only these two could literally hit the ball and, without looking, head straight down the middle of the fairway to play their next shot.
Moe was certainly a challenge to understand because of his personality and he was awkward in most social situations.
Moe’s cause was not aided by the fact that he frequently butted heads with the ruling board of governors and that such disagreements became quite public.
Many dismissed Moe’s rambling as gibberish when he tried to explain the foundational elements of his swing. Described as anything from an idiot savant to an autistic, Moe spoke in fragments and sing/songy repetitions. Despite his prodigous talent as a player, it was exceedingly rare that anyone would take the time with Moe to unlock the secrets of his incredible swing. It was difficult at best to weave a comprehensible swing theory from the thought fragments that Moe shared from time to time.
In the past decade or so, a whole new group of teachers and players have discovered Moe and have set about to piece and parse together exactly what the man meant.
Competing proponents of the real Moe Norman swing have come upon the scene, each proclaiming that they have solved the mystery behind one of the most unique swings in all of golf . Unfortunately, these theories are often the product of well paid copywriting which promises much but delivers little.
The pretender swings being marketed today lack the power and penetrating ball flight of the original swing. No one seems to be able to consistently duplicate the action which allowed Moe to compress the ball time after time .
My colleagues and I have tried these new methods and to a man (and a lady) all have encountered a disturbing loss of distance with every club in the bag.

When I was younger and more robust, I caddied on one of the satellite pro tours. As I indicated previously,Moe was one of three pros in our group for the first two days of the tournament.
Patience was not Moe’s long suit when it came to the pace of play among pros. I could empathize with Moe roving and vocalizing to himself to pass the time. To cope with the tedium, Moe was constantly dropping balls down wherever and chipping them . Because he was a bundle of energy, he needed outlets for his nervous tension.
Through the years the stories of Moe’s behaviour and decorum have multiplied to the point that it is now difficult to sift fact from fiction. The stories are certainly more suspect when they come from former caddies! The anecdotes and recollections might be fictional at best but what is factual is the man was a ball striking machine. And he continued to amaze and mesmerise galleries and onlookers alike with his unerring prowess well into his senior years.
I can personally attest to the man’s prowess and uncanny accuracy . In the days when exhibitions were up close and personal, I had the chance to shag balls for Moe.An demonsration that drew sadly only a handful of spectators. Throughout the exhibit, ball after ball landed but a few feet from where he motioned us to stand. After each series of balls he would simply wave us to a new location. Words do no justice in trying to capture the enormity of his skill.

No two men were more different than Moe and Hogan. Inasmuch as Moe was eccentric, Ben Hogan was both aloof and dismissive. Moe imperfectly tried to share what he had discovered whereas Hogan maintained a shroud of secrecy. The Hogan move has bewidered and befuddled a generation of golfers devoted to unravelling its mystery. The mystery of the Hogan swing has been an elusive quest which has consumed hundreds of golfers for over a half century.
Perhaps to Mr Hogan’s satisfaction, no one has fully revealed the intracacies of his swing. Hogan has many imitators but few would claim that they are true exhibitors of the method. Knowing Mr. Hogan, it probably gives him some measure of satisfaction that all this toil has borne little fruit . When asked to reveal his secrets, Hogan often gruffly responded by telling his audience to go find it themselves. You could never mistake Ben Hogan as a kindly father determined to patiently share his accumulated knowledge with his offspring.
Hogan didn’t engender warmth of spirit. And in fairness, he didn’t seek it in others.Few people, including his peers ever got close to Ben Hogan.Hogan did not bridge the gap between himself and the fans of the game
