Most golfers would say that the dimples on a golf ball only hurt the player, by adding drag and resistance shortening a shot that would be very long with a ball that had no dimples. What they don’t realize is that the golf ball dimples are designed to help a player.

The design of the dimples is key to a player hitting the ball great distances. The player might not believe that the drag and resistance produced by the dimples actually increase the distance the ball flies. When the golf balls is struck and is rotating backwards the dimples, while creating drag and resistance, are also creating lift, getting the ball airborne and keeping it airborne allowing it to travel much farther than a ball would if it had no dimples.

If a golf ball had no dimples it would have the opposite of lift and a force would be pushing down on the ball forcing it towards the ground making it impossible to reach great distances with the ball. Also if the golf ball did not have any dimples it would have no backspin making it impossible to control and making it impossible to stop the ball on any greens and that is the short reason why golf balls have dimples.
